If the last decade was all about going faster, harder and staying busy all day, every day; then, in the next year (and likely decade to follow), I think it’s going to be all about the slow down. From restorative fitness to virtual wellness, we’re definitely going to see a shift where less can actually be more. And, while wellness remains a mainstay in our lexicon, our overall well-being is going to take a step into the spotlight, as more and more begin to prioritize their mental health and ditch their stress.
Wellness trends are some of my favorite to indulge in because I’m always looking for ways to elevate my routines. So keep scrolling for the 2020 trends I’m predicting will survive and thrive this year!
1. Recovery-Focused Workouts
In the ’10s we focused on all things HIIT and training hard. Now, it’s time to recover hard. Proper, active R&R decreases your risk of injury and increases your returns. Plus, you get to test new methods like cryotherapy, flotation therapy and even recovery-focused studios.
#2. High-Intensity, Low-Impact Training (HILIT)
Low-impact training is now trending with recovery at the center of everyone’s 2020 fitness goals. I know I’m already incorporating blends of cardio and physically alleviating options like P.vovle, which is one of my favorite HILIT workouts. It’s all about strengthening and lengthening without skipping and important step, maintenance.
#3. At-Home Gyms
Virtual group fitness classes are not slowing down anytime soon, at least not in this decade. Working out at home will get that much easier this year with the rise of workout apps. Read more about my favorites here!
#4. Mindfulness 2.0
If you’ve longed to find the right work/life balance, then this year is your year to fully lean into airplane mode. Expect to see more digital detoxing in the name of mental health, heightened focus and increased creativity.
#5. Virtual Wellness
Not having enough time is no longer an excuse as we slow down this year. Virtual Wellness and the growing need to improve our overall wellbeing on-demand, whenever or wherever we are, is now an integral part of our lives. Which is why I love using Core and mediation to start my days intentionally or re-center if I’m having a particularly stressful one.
#6. Plant-Forward Nutrition
This might not be a new concept for some, but this year plants are in. While this isn’t the same as a full vegan diet, it’s more about getting the benefits of eating more plants based on what works for you!
#7. Wellness Retreats
Wellness travel is about to get an upgrade in 2020 as well! In the name of community (and bettering oneself), we’ll find power in numbers at Wellness Clubs like The Well (in New York), retreats like Camp Yoga or my personal favorite, Miraval Wellness Resort.
