We’re officially adults. Ok, maybe we’ve been officially adults for a while now. Nonetheless, it’s time to start acting like one! This past year being cooped up at home has given me the chance to assess the things in my home (and what I’m lacking) that come in handy during this *season* of life.
We’ve all been there—our mom (or any adult, for that matter) is at our house and they ask for the most random, and I mean RANDOM, thing. And then, when you proceed to ask them why in the world you would have such a thing, they look at you like you have ten heads? How could you not have [insert thing], Nastia?! It really gives your adulthood a kick in the gut.
So, I’ve done a mental inventory of all of those times I’ve been asked for those random things OR have been in a real life situation where the need for that thing has arisen. If you’re like me, you don’t like to disappoint your parents. You want to make them proud in everything you do. Including stocking your home with the most random but useful things that they may, in the off chance, ask to use. Keep scrolling for my list of 5 things every adult needs in their home!
1. A complete knife set.
You may already have this, and if so, props to you! Many years ago, I had my parents over for dinner and tried to feed them steak with my ordinary silverware set knives. Wrong move. If you love entertaining, this is an especially important buy. You always want the right knives for your guests, and you need multiple options when you’re cooking food, too!
2. A toolkit.
Chances are you’ve acquired random tools throughout the years, but a full toolkit is a non-negotiable for all adult households. IKEA wrenches only go so far, my friends.
3. A filing cabinet and/or filing box with tabbed folders.
We may be close to the extinction of paper records, but it’s always good to keep those that do remain in good order (i.e., mortgage documents, tax documents, titles, etc.) via a filing cabinet or an expandable filing box. Having your documents organized by type and year is the way to go for quick access.
4. A functioning printer.
Relevant to the aforementioned filing system and soon-to-be extinct paper is a functioning printer. How many times have you needed a printer?! So many times.
5. Thank you cards.
Ok, I’m unintentionally creating a paper theme here, but NOTHING can compare to a handwritten thank you card. Preferably, they’re custom stationary with your name and “from the desk of” written on them. Classy, classy lady.
Honorable mentions:
A fire extinguisher, cloth napkins, extra toothbrushes, matching hangers, a handheld clothing steamer, and a carbon monoxide detector!
