Even after years of competing, running never came easy to me. A motivational playlist or helpful podcast just proved to be no match for my runners block. The minute I stepped on a treadmill, I looked forward to my destination MUCH more than the journey itself. What I did learn was that there were plenty of other cardio alternatives that go the mile! Switching between high intensity interval training and even water for your cardio fix are great replacements that deliver.
#1. Jumping Rope
Jumping rope is a low impact, highly efficient alternative to treadmill training. Just 10 minutes of daily rope-work is just as effective as a 30-minute jog. It also increases leg strength while toning and sculpting your arms.
#2. Rowing
Did you know that rowing uses major muscle groups in almost every part of your body? A high intensity row will elevate your heart rate, similarly to an efficient run.
#3. Boxing
The benefits of a boxing class are insane. It’s as much of a cardio alternative as it is a workout for the mind as well! You’re bound to improve your coordination and strength, leaving the treadmill behind you 🙂
#4. Spinning
Spinning is the new It workout. By now, you’ve probably had a friend or 10 ask you to a spin class. Cycling is a great cardio alternative and you’re bound to find serious Spotify inspo during your workout.
#5. Swimming
I’m sure you’ve never thought of high intensity swimming as a replacement for your miles, but it’s an all-around totally worth it, low-impact exercise. A few laps in a pool will leave you wondering why you didn’t make the switch sooner!
Running may be a go-to for cardio but the truth is that there are SO many alternatives for those who just don’t like running. I hope this inspires you to get up and move leaving that dreaded treadmill behind! Be sure to let me know what workouts you tried below!
