Detox is definitely a buzz word, but have you ever thought about it in a more holistic way? I’m not talking about drinking green juice for four days straight—I’m talking about meaningful, long-term detox that heals your body from the inside and makes your home a safer place to live. As I continue to learn more about my personal environmental impact and make incremental changes to the products I use on a daily basis, I’ve been thinking a lot about this concept of “detox” as a way to strip back to things that will work in harmony with my body, and not harm it!
If you’ve been considering detoxing your home and body, this post is for you. I’m rounding up five easy tips that you can implement immediately that will have a positive impact on your health, from the inside out.
1. Detox your cleaning products.
Have you ever taken a look at the ingredients in common household cleaning products? YIKES. Some of the most common brands are riddled with harmful chemicals like phthalates, triclosan, ammonia, chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and PERC. Even our detergents, which soak the clothes that touch our body on a daily basis, harbor these ingredients. The good news is that it’s become SO easy to replace traditional cleaning products with effective, SAFE cleaning products. Some of my favorite brands are Branch Basics, BLUELAND, and Seventh Generation.
2. Detox your skincare and makeup products.
Skincare and makeup seem like the obvious place to start when detoxing your body of harmful chemicals, but SO many common brands have ingredients that are less than ideal when you consider that they’re soaking into your skin (and sometimes bloodstream) on a daily basis. If you don’t know where to start, check out Volition Beauty, Clean At Sephora, Credo Beauty, and Follain. All of these retailers have banned ingredient lists and high standards for what makes the cut.
3. Try dry brushing.
This trend seemed to see its peak a couple years back, but it’s actually an ancient practice deriving from Egyptian culture (and we all know how beautiful Cleopatra was). According to the Cleveland Clinic, dry brushing helps detoxify by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow/drainage. It’s something I do on a near-daily basis, and I can totally tell the difference in how I feel if I don’t.
4. Get an EMF blocker.
You’ve likely heard of EMF’s, but have you done anything to protect against them yet? EMF blockers block electromagnetic radiation that emanate from the electronics you use on a daily basis (like your laptop, phone, and iPad). Some say that when you plug in EMF blockers into your walls, you might even experience “detox-like symptoms” as your body is cleansed of the radiation.
5. Change your plastic food savers to glass.
If you don’t have a plastic food saver from 1999 still in your possession, are you really an adult?! BPA, an industrial chemical found in plastics, has been shown to seep into food and beverages from containers made with the chemical and can act as an endocrine disrupter. A lot of plastics these days are BPA free, but to be on the safe side, switch to glass! Everyone could use a food saver upgrade every now and again, anyway.
