If there’s anything we learned from 2020, it’s that your home is your sanctuary—for so many reasons. If there’s anything else we learned, it’s that a good night’s sleep is still paramount to mental and physical wellbeing. Whether you’re a busy mom, a work-obsessed Millennial, or even if you’re among the lucky few who have struck a balance between life and all other things, there’s nothing like a solid eight hours to make showing up tomorrow that much easier.
For that reason, making my bedroom a place where I could feel at peace was a huge priority for me when designing my home. I had a few non-negotiables on my list, so I thought I’d share those with you today! The goal of my primary bedroom was to make it feel like a tranquil, cloud-like space—where I could float off to sleep, practice morning meditation, and just escape the outside world. If you’re into those things, too, I highly suggest implementing some of the below items!
1. A NICE MATTRESS
Investing in a nice mattress was something I knew I needed to shell out some cash for, so it was a line item in my design budget. I like a soft mattress that hugs you in all of the right places, but doesn’t let you sink in. And no foamy textures for me, please. If a new mattress isn’t in the cards right now, you can easily upgrade your current mattress by adding a plush mattress topper. I like Brooklinen’s down alternative mattress topper, which I have on one of my guest beds. Use my code nastia25 for $25 off orders of $100 or more at Brooklinen.
2. BLACKOUT CURTAINS
You know the feeling…you’ve had one too many glasses of wine the night before and BAM. The hot sun shines on you at 6:30 AM, jump starting your hangover and setting the tone for the day. Even if you’re not a drinker, early morning unwelcome sun is just not nice. These Belgian Flax Linen beauties from Pottery Barn are a great option, and you can choose blackout lining or cotton lining.
3. A SOUND MACHINE
Yes, I’m one of those people. Give me all the sleep tools, and feel free to make fun—but I’m telling you, they work. I love to put a little bit of white noise on in the background before I fall asleep (if you live in a city you NEED one of these), and my favorite sound machine is the Hatch Restore. It also has a billion other features that you can make use of, like meditations, alarm clock, sunrise wake-up, and more.
4. AN OIL DIFFUSER
I’m a big believer in essential oils. Have you ever tried ginger or peppermint on the temples to quell nausea? Essential oils, when used properly, have the ability to calm, energize, and trigger physiological responses. In my bedroom, I love to diffuse a combination of lavender, frankincense, and eucalyptus. This chic oil diffuser looks so good on my bedside table—almost like a decorative object!
5. A TEA KETTLE
Yes. For the bedroom. If you have a little place for a tea set-up in your room, TRUST me, you’re going to want to get this electric kettle. First of all, it just feel LUXURIOUS to have a tea kettle in your room. Like, Bridgerton vibes. Second, the British know what’s up. Tea is so relaxing at bedtime. I like to have a hot mint or camomile tea before bed to unwind. It’s a whole ritual.
