It’s November, and before we know it, it’s going to be 2019—ah! I recently celebrated my 29th birthday, and it got me thinking about the goals I have set for myself over the past year and those I’m looking to tick off in the year to come. I remember the first goal I set for myself as a little girl: I wanted to be an Olympic champion. Start small right? I had that dream, to win gold, and I truly didn’t know what the path would look like, or the amount of work that would go into reaching that dream. It kept me hungry to keep going, not to quit, because every day I would get one day closer to achieving that goal I had set. I kept working toward this goal day in and day out, and it took a great amount of perseverance and commitment to get there. Then, finally [read: eighteen years later] came the moment where I did it, I could check it off the list—it felt, well, AMAZING! But after that, I needed my next goal.
Once I retired from gymnastics, I had to transition those gymnastic goals into life goals. I’ll admit, this was tough! Gymnastics was my life and entire world for so many years, training was my job and that was my primary focus. It has been such an amazing growth opportunity to set goals now for myself outside of the gym. I have set career goals, health goals, and it has truly changed my mindset. There is something about waking up every day with purpose, knowing you are working on achieving something, whether that goal is big or small, short- or long-term; it’s a goal! I think when we hold ourselves accountable for achieving something, it helps us to stay on track. I’ll check in with myself and think, “Is this helping me get to where I want to be tomorrow?”
So let’s set a goal together! We have two months left in the year, plenty of time to win, right? Set a small goal for yourself today, write it down and check back in with yourself every week to see if you are getting closer to crossing it off the list. I know you have it in you!
Some of my immediate goals include:
1. Reaching out to two mentors a week to set meetings and pick their brains
2. Learning the basics of coding (I once read that every founder of a company should know and be familiar with what EACH of their employees does on a day-to-day basis)
3. 15 pull-ups in a row (I used to be able to bang these out in my sleep!!!)
4. Read at least one book a month (sounds like an easy feat, but it’s so easy to get lost in work and then crash with my daily dose of IG at night)
5. Help/give advice/provide resources to as many young entrepreneurs as I can
